Project Overview

Superstition Energy Storage (Superstition) is ideally located on an industrially zoned parcel in the Town of Gilbert, Arizona, immediately adjacent to the existing Corbell Substation. The 90 MW / 360 MWh battery storage facility will provide capacity and energy services to the Salt River Project (SRP) electrical grid in southeast Phoenix, enhancing grid reliability and accelerating the integration of readily available, domestically produced renewable energy sources in the sunny southwestern United States. A Special Use Permit application for the Superstition project was approved by the Town of Gilbert in late 2022, facilitating public engagement and education about the facility in the process.

Construction of the Superstition Energy Storage facility began in fall 2023. The summer 2024 completion of the Superstition facility will ensure that Salt River Project meets its reliability needs and supports the attainment of its goals to reduce carbon dioxide by 65% from 2005 levels by 2035 and by 90% by 2050.

Situated directly adjacent to existing transmission lines and the existing Corbell substation in an industrial park, the site will have no adverse environmental impacts. The Superstition site is an optimal location for new energy infrastructure, as it will eliminate the need for long transmission lines to connect it to the existing power grid and is a conducive use to the surrounding infrastructure.
